Three Poems by Hailey Newbury

I have included a composition of my poetry that illustrates the powerful force of love, that I believe many can relate to. I start with a poem I wrote to my then boyfriend after we first said, "I love you", followed by a poem written after our engagement, with the last one encompassing my love for him after we broke up in the pursuit of our careers in veterinary and human medicine.

Oh, the sacrifices we make for love.

9 February 2022

Sometimes I wish to go back in time,

Not to change anything,

But just to feel things twice.

Under October stars when we shared our first

kiss,

And dancing at the gala in a state of pure bliss.

How much I missed you when were apart,

But it made me realize how I love you right from

the very start.

Nights spent lying in your embrace

And waking up to your smiling face.

Sometimes it feels too good to be true,

That I have found such a wonderful love with

you!

If someone asked me

What it felt like to love you,

They may as we! have asked me to describe the

taste of water.

In turn, I would ask them to imagine living in

absence of it.

Sure, you can get by a day without it,

Perhaps even survive a week.

But eventually the body begins to whither away,

For the heart alone becomes so very bleak.

The idea of living without water,

Is akin to not loving you -

Impossible.

14 September 2024

In the quiet of twilight’s glow,

Where memories ebb and flow,

I stand with thoughts of yesteryears,

And wonder if you still hold me near.

Once, our hearts did bind,

With a promise ring, a token kind,

Of a shared life and dreams we wove,

In a world where our love soared.

The ring we shared, a binding gold so pure,

A symbol intended for a love so sure

Yet time, with its relentless stream,

Led us apart, and with it, all of our dreams.

Still, in the quiet of my nights,

I see the ring, and feel the sting,

Of all that was lost, of what could be.

So now with trembling hands,

I offer you back what we once planned,

Not as a chain to bind or hold, but as a token of

love untold.

I will cherish all we had so true,

With a heart that will forever beat for you.

But take this ring, with all of its grace,

And find it a warm embrace,

With the woman you will spend the rest of your

days.

With all my love,

Hailey
